MS Dhoni has been a cornerstone of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. His leadership and performance have played a pivotal role in elevating both the franchise and the tournament to new heights. However, a pressing question looms over the cricketing world: Have we seen the last of Dhoni as a player in the IPL?
Speculation continues to swirl around Dhoni's future, especially amid reports about the retention policy for the 2025 IPL edition. Many fans and analysts are wondering whether Dhoni will don the CSK jersey again. Although there were rumors about Dhoni possibly transitioning into a mentor role for the team, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan quickly dismissed them.
Despite this, no concrete decision has been made by either CSK or Dhoni regarding his future. "We are yet to hear from him," a source within the franchise told the *Indian Express*, adding fuel to the uncertainty. The former CSK captain was recently on vacation in the USA and returned only yesterday, leaving the situation still up in the air.
As for the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction, it is speculated that teams will be allowed to retain up to five players, an increase from the previous limit of four. However, Right to Match (RTM) cards will not be permitted, and teams can retain a maximum of two overseas players. This information, though, is yet to be officially confirmed.
"Once the BCCI makes a formal decision on the number of retentions, we will have a clearer picture," the source added, emphasizing the uncertainty that still surrounds the situation.
Dhoni appears to be gradually planning his exit from the game. He has already relinquished the captaincy twice, once handing over the reins to Ravindra Jadeja in 2022, only to step back in due to Jadeja's struggles. He has since passed the leadership baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad and seems unlikely to take it back.
Interestingly, CSK recently signed Robin Minz, a wicketkeeper from Jharkhand like Dhoni. Unfortunately, Minz couldn’t participate in the IPL 2024 season due to an accident. Regardless of Dhoni's decision, it’s understood that CSK is actively looking to secure a wicketkeeper in the upcoming mega auction to prepare for the future.
The uncertainty around Dhoni's participation in the IPL adds to the intrigue of the next season. As fans await an official announcement, the cricketing world remains on edge, wondering whether this legendary player will continue to grace the field or step into a new role.
